Ikwechegh was charged with beating Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, outside of his home in Abuja.
A video that went viral shows Ikwechegh and the driver having a heated argument. Ikwechegh accused the driver of being disrespectful by requesting him to come to the car to pick up his item.
Social media was enraged by the October 27 event that took place in Abuja’s Maitama neighborhood.
Ikwechegh was charged with three counts of assault and threat of death in court on Wednesday.
He entered a not guilty plea to the allegations brought by the Inspector General of Police’s office. Then, his attorney submitted an oral application.for his release.

The bail application was set to N500k

The application was approved by the magistrate, Abubakar Umar Sai’id, with a bail amount of N500,000 and two sureties of the same amount.
According to him, the sureties must be residents of the court’s jurisdiction and present proof of residency in the form of utility bills. November 8, 2024 was chosen as the new date for the case.

An Opened investigation into the bolt driver abuser

In response to claims of abuse against Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya, the House of Representatives has opened an investigation into Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the Aba North/South federal district of Abia State.
The House sent Ikwechegh to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges during Tuesday’s plenary session after Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere brought up a “point of privilege” motion.
All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) member Ikwechegh made headlines lately after a video of him and Abuwatseya getting into a furious argument went viral.

Ikwechegh accused the driver of being rude by asking the lawmaker to come to the car to pick up his box, and he was seen slapping and insulting him in the video.

The incident, which took place in Abuja’s Maitama sector on October 27, was widely criticized and disciplinary action was demanded.
Since then, Ikwechegh has been invited to be questioned by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command over the altercation.
Ikwechegh apologized to Abuwatseya and the Nigerian people in a statement, expressing regret. He expressed regret and blamed his conduct on a brief fit of rage, but he made it clear that there should be no justification for what he did.
