Breaking: APC issues 48-hour resignation notice to Rivers State governor

The All Progressive Congress (APC) has issued a 48-hour resignation ultimatum to the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

The APC issued this directive in Port Harcourt on Monday, warning that if the governor fails to step down, they will initiate impeachment proceedings against him.

The party cited several impeachable offenses allegedly committed by the governor, as outlined in a recent Supreme Court judgment.

Some of which were stated to include governing the state with only 12.5% of the State Assembly members and irregularities in budget presentation and local government elections.

Tony Okocha, the state chairman of the APC, described the governor’s invitation to the State House of Assembly as “absurd” and “embarrassing”. Okocha questioned the purpose of the invitation, which was made through a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government.

According to Okocha, the current political situation in the state requires a straightforward approach, rather than a meeting that implies “connivance” between the governor and the lawmakers.

The APC chairman emphasized that the meeting should focus on state business, rather than assembly members discussing their sitting venue.

Okocha also pointed out that the budget is not an issue for discussion, but rather an action to be implemented by the governor.

The APC chairman stated that Governor Fubara is “sitting on a keg of gunpowder” and had previously refused their advice, claiming he had the “red biro” to make decisions.

Rivers State has been caught up in political crisis following the ongoing political conflict between governor Fubara and the FCT minister Wike.

On February 28, the Supreme Court delivered a judgment that barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the accountant-general of the federation from releasing statutory monthly allocations to Rivers State.

The court also ordered the Amaewhule-led faction comprising 27 lawmakers of the House of Assembly loyal to Wike to resume sitting, in accordance with the judgment.

Following the judgment, the lawmakers resumed sitting and requested the governor to present the 2025 appropriations bill for consideration.

Recall that the court had also nullified the local government election held in Rivers state on October 5, 2024.

In response, the governor in a letter dated March 7, 2025, and issued by the office of the secretary to the Rivers state government, invited the Amaewhule-led house of assembly members to a meeting at the government house in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Monday.
