APC’s Amaechi Remains a Key Figure as LGA Elections Looms
Former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, continues to wield significant influence in the political landscape of Rivers State, according to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite his recent silence on state and national politics, Amaechi is still considered a key leader within the party and has thrown his support behind APC candidates for the upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) elections in Rivers State. The APC officially presented party flags to its candidates for 21 LGA chairmanship positions ahead of the scheduled elections on October 5, 2024.
Speaking at the event, Chief Emeka Beke, the APC Chairman in Rivers State, reiterated Amaechi’s leadership role and strong presence within the state’s political framework. He noted that even though Amaechi has kept a low profile lately, his influence remains intact, especially within the party. Beke emphasized that Amaechi has not distanced himself from the APC’s political activities and has supported the party’s candidates for the upcoming elections.
According to Beke, Amaechi’s political legacy in Rivers is undeniable, stating, “You cannot talk about APC or politics in Rivers State without dedicating an entire chapter to Amaechi. He’s been a strong force and continues to guide the party through these elections.”
Election Preparations and Legal Battles
The APC chairman also spoke about the legal landscape surrounding the elections. He addressed concerns regarding the validity of the upcoming polls due to conflicting court judgments. According to Beke, a Port Harcourt court ruling by Justice I. Igwe had already cleared the way for the elections before a later ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja sought to disrupt the process. Beke expressed confidence that the election would proceed as planned, urging citizens and party supporters to stay calm.
“There’s no tension in Rivers State. The election will hold on October 5. Any individual or group trying to create chaos will face the consequences,” Beke warned, adding that Rivers people have overcome greater challenges in the past. He also mentioned that other parties have struggled to organize their campaigns, while the APC has remained consistent in its preparations, with consultations at the unit, ward, and LGA levels already in full swing.
APC Campaign Flag Presentation
At the event, Beke formally handed over the party flags to the 21 chairmanship candidates, confirming that all have been screened by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and are fully qualified to contest in the election. The party leader urged RSIEC and security forces to ensure a peaceful election process, calling for vigilance against anyone attempting to disrupt the polls.
“These candidates have been cleared to contest, and the election will proceed as scheduled. We expect a free, fair, and credible election, as promised by RSIEC,” Beke stated. He expressed confidence in the security agencies, urging them to take action against troublemakers who may attempt to disrupt the election process.
Beke also emphasized that Rivers State is entering a new chapter under the leadership of its newly-elected governor, Monday Okpebholo, who he described as “God-fearing.” He highlighted that the era of instability under the former governor, Nyesom Wike, is over and that the new administration will prioritize peace and security.
