Nigeria’s Fortunes Can Improve With Leaders of Integrity – Prof. Pat Utomi

Renowned political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential for greatness, asserting that the country’s fortunes could turn around if leaders of integrity are placed in positions of authority. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Utomi emphasized that Nigeria is not short of the human capital needed to excel but suffers from a deficiency in values and character at the leadership level.

Utomi’s remarks come amid growing concerns about the state of governance in Nigeria, where corruption, weak institutions, and poor leadership have stifled the country’s development over the years. The professor pointed out that Nigeria’s problems are not necessarily a lack of resources or talent, but rather a collapse in values and the breakdown of crucial institutions that should uphold the rule of law and promote accountability.

Leaders of Character as the Key to Nigeria’s Progress

“Ultimately, values shape human progress,” Utomi said during the interview. He argued that if leaders with a strong sense of character, integrity, and commitment to public service were placed in positions of authority, Nigeria’s trajectory could be dramatically altered. According to Utomi, values are the foundation of any nation’s progress, and when those values are in disarray, development becomes difficult.

Utomi highlighted that the country is blessed with an abundance of human capital—talented individuals capable of driving innovation and progress. However, these talents are often overshadowed by the lack of competent leadership that prioritizes personal gain over national development. “We have the ingredients, the human capital that it takes to show the way,” Utomi said.

The Collapse of Institutions

One of the primary concerns raised by Utomi is the collapse of Nigeria’s institutions, which he believes are critical to any nation’s advancement. He pointed to the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as examples of institutions that have lost public trust, thereby hindering the country’s ability to move forward.

“How do we ensure that we have strong institutions and that we have values that ensure that character matters, and that people of character can show a light? We can do it, I am absolutely confident because I have seen it happen in human history,” Utomi stated. He underscored the need for a judiciary that the people can rely on, as no country can progress without a judicial system that upholds justice and fairness.

Utomi argued that strengthening institutions like INEC, which is responsible for overseeing elections, and ensuring that these bodies are free from political manipulation are essential steps toward achieving a more prosperous Nigeria. For him, institutional reforms must go hand-in-hand with a values revolution, where integrity and competence are prized over nepotism and corruption.

The Role of Young Nigerians

Utomi also criticized the role that some young Nigerians play in perpetuating the country’s challenges by electing dishonest leaders. He argued that when young people, who should be the drivers of change, instead vote for leaders based on personal interests or tribal loyalties, the nation suffers. Utomi called for a shift toward competence, where leaders are chosen based on their ability to serve the people rather than their connections or affiliations.

“When leaders replace nepotism with competence, the nation will prosper,” Utomi asserted, urging the younger generation to be more discerning in their political choices and to support candidates who have demonstrated integrity and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.

Hope for a Better Nigeria

Despite the challenges, Utomi remains optimistic about Nigeria’s future. He believes that with the right leadership and a renewed focus on values and institutions, the country can overcome its current obstacles. His message is one of hope and confidence, urging Nigerians not to lose sight of the potential for positive change.

The political economist’s comments are a call to action for both the leaders and the citizens of Nigeria to prioritize character, competence, and values as the foundation for national progress. As the country continues to grapple with its many challenges, Utomi’s vision for a better Nigeria offers a blueprint for the kind of leadership and institutional reforms needed to chart a new course.
