Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president, has denounced recent events in Kaduna, Katsina, and other regions of the nation, calling them a perilous attack on civic liberties during President Bola Tinubu’s government.
The remark was made the day after el-Rufai and seven ADC leaders were asked to be questioned by the Kaduna State Police Command about allegations of inciting, conspiracy, and other offences.

In a statement released on Friday, Atiku criticised the police invitation to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai and African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders in the state because to allegations of public disruption and criminal plot.
Atiku also pointed to the violent disruption of a Katsina Elders Forum meeting on security reforms and the assault on former Attorney General Abubakar Malami as proof of what he described as an increasing tendency towards authoritarianism.

“These incidents are not isolated. They signify a coordinated assault on dissenting voices, civic freedoms, and the essence of pluralistic democracy,” Atiku said.

The former vice president issued a warning, saying that criminalising opposition and stifling nonviolent civic participation might bring Nigeria perilously near to totalitarianism.
He stressed that the defence of democracy must be a shared responsibility and encouraged Nigerians to acknowledge the gravity of the situation.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us, not just the ruling party or any single individual. We must not allow the principles of liberty, justice, and the rule of law to be undermined by partisan desperation,” he said.
