The Sokoto State government has introduced subsidy on the sale of rice to residents at a reduced price of N48,000 per 50kg bag. This initiative aims to make food more accessible to the people of Sokoto.
Recall that the prices of 50kg bags of rice in the country had recently been on the increase with purchase beginning from around N85,000 depending on the quality .
The Sokoto State Governor, Governor Ahmad Aliyu made this announcement on Sunday in a statement, highlighting that this initiative is part of the government’s partnership with donors and stakeholders.

The introduction of subsidized rice is part of the state government’s efforts to provide relief materials to its citizens. Recently, the state government officially launched the distribution of essential relief items to the poor and marginalized across Sokoto State.
According to Governor Aliyu, the government’s provision of food items, financial support, and motor bikes to the needy in the states is as a result of the generosity of esteemed donors. He highlighted that this initiative is proof of the Sokoto state government’s commitment to inclusive governance and the welfare of its people.
A part of his statement read “in addition, we have introduced the sale of subsidized rice at N48,000 per 50kg bag to make food more affordable for our people.
“This initiative, undertaken during the sacred month of Ramadan, reflects our dedication to alleviating hardship and fostering a more compassionate and resilient society.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all donors and stakeholders who have partnered with us in this noble cause,” he stated.
The governor further reassured relevant stakeholders that the state will continue to assist the vulnerable members of the community.

The Sokoto State government had previously implemented a N1 billion subsidized food items initiative in February 2025. This programme was directed towards provision of affordable commodities to civil servants and low-income earners across six local government areas.
Alhaji Ibrahim Dadi-Adare, the Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs revealed details of the initiative during a training session organized for shop facilitators. He explained that the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of buying essential food items and improve workers’ welfare.
“The Sokoto State Government has launched a N1 billion subsidized foodstuff initiative aimed at providing affordable commodities to civil servants and low-income earners in six local government areas across the state.
While further providing insights on the initiative, the Chairman of the implementation committee, Alhaji Chiso Dattijo, stated that the first phase will majorly be targeted at state and local government employees, including primary school teachers to lessen the burden of rising food costs.
The six local governments selected for the initial rollout include; Dange Shuni, Wamakko, Bodinga, Kware, Sokoto North, and Sokoto South. It was also revealed by the officials that plans to expand the initiative to more local governments within Sokoto, in the future are in progress.
Under the scheme, eligible workers can purchase food items worth up to 30% of their monthly salary, with a spending limit of N15,000 per staff.
