BREAKING: Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, Dies at 56
Lt Gen Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the ill Chief of Army Staff (COAS), died at 56 years old.
Lagbaja, who was born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, was appointed 27th Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023.
On Wednesday, the president announced his death.
“Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, has passed away. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has announced the death of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of the Army Staff, aged 56.He died on Tuesday night in Lagos following an illness. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19. According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu ordered the Army General’s family to fly him abroad for medical treatment.
According to SaharaReporters it was told by sources that his illness was “strange”.
“The Chief of Army Staff has been missing for several days. He has not been seen at Army headquarters or any military function in the past three weeks. I can confirm that he is severely ill and was brought to the hospital. However, his family members arranged for him to be relocated outside of the nation for medical treatment,” one of the people stated.
There is currently no one to report to. Anyone can get sick, but someone must be in charge. I wish him a speedy recovery; I’ve known him since our days in Makurdi, Benue State. We were both young officers, and he was a captain.”
Lagbaja’s health has deteriorated, raising serious concerns inside the military, according to various individuals who talked with naijaeyes.
Tinubu promoted Olufemi Oluyede, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, to the rank of Lieutenant General.
Naijaeyesblog learned that the ceremony took place on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.Meanwhile, last Wednesday, President Tinubu nominated Major General Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to replace Lagbaja.
