Muhammed Buhari, Nigerian’s immediate past president has reaffirmed his allegiance to APC urging the public to continue addressing him as a member of the party.
He expressed his gratitude to the APC and pledged to support the party’s growth and popularity.
The former president conveyed this through a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu. He clarified his position without referencing any specific individual, group of personalities, principles, or ongoing discussions about issues and ideals among APC leaders at different levels.
Buhari’s statement comes in response to claims by Nasir El-Rufia, the former governor of Kaduna state who suggested that the ex-president was fully aware of his defection from APC to the SDP.
On Monday, March 10, El-Rufai officially announced his resignation from the APC and his decision to join the SDP. Before departing, he criticized the APC and president Bola Tinubu’s administration for failing to uphold its promises to Nigeria.

He accused the party of being controlled by a single individual, citing its failure to hold a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. El-Rufai also expressed his frustration over the lack of internal democracy within the APC stating that the party had abandoned him, leaving him with no choice but to move on.
Speaking on Thursday, March 13, Buhari clarified that he wanted to eliminate any doubts regarding his membership and loyalty to the APC. He reassured that he will never turn against the party and remained committed to promoting it. His statement partially reads:
“I am an APC member and I like to be addressed as such. I will try to popularise the party by all means.”
Buhari also said that at the moment, he was very grateful for the support the APC gave him before and during his tenure as the president of Nigeria. He noted that it was the highest honor given to him and that he demanded nothing more.
