Can APC Capitalize on Opposition Turmoil?
The All Progressives Congress (APC) is enjoying a smooth run in governing Nigeria, with no significant challenges from the opposition. This dominance could persist until the 2027 presidential election, as the major opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), are embroiled in internal crises.
The PDP, once a powerful force, is facing deep divisions, particularly after the fallout from its 2022 presidential primaries, leading to fractures within its ranks. Key members, such as former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, are already signaling their preference for APC in 2027, despite still being part of PDP.
Similarly, the Labour Party is dealing with a leadership struggle, with factions within the party at odds over the tenure of its current leaders. The APGA is no stranger to such issues, as it continues to battle over who holds legitimate leadership within the party.
These internal conflicts within the opposition parties could pave the way for the APC to maintain its hold on power beyond 2027.
