Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, has come under fire from Peter Ameh, the national secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, for his choice to resume his position following his suspension.
In an interview with Channels Television’s on Monday, Ameh claimed that the governor’s recent actions and decision amounted to a capitulation that goes against democratic norms.

Recall that the governor’s camp announced that the countdown to his anticipated return to office on September 18, 2025, has begun as confirmed by the FCT minister, Nyseom Wike in a previous statement following the Rivers LGA polls.
He said, “For me, I’m already disappointed in Fubara that he has shown, you know, that ehm, what he wants is to get back to office.
“I think he would have given it all up. It wouldn’t have been bad to fight for the future generation.”

Ameh said that Fubara had “been beaten to surrender” and accused state officials of utilising state resources against the governor.
“I think he was beaten to surrender, and that is not good for our democracy… our state instrumentality of the state was deployed against him, and he surrendered,” he said.
The CUPP chieftain stressed that Nigeria’s emerging democratic processes be protected and strengthened. He continued by saying that democracy must be fostered in order for “young generation and future generations to be able to go freely to the polls.”

“Whether it’s a semi-democratic process, we must be able to nurture it to become a fully blown democratic system,” Ameh said.
