The country’s growing insecurity, particularly the resurgence of hostilities in Benue and Plateau states, where several attacks have killed dozens, has led to a vote of no confidence in Defense Minister Mohammad Badaru Abubakar.
In the face of growing insecurity crisis in Benue and Plateau states, the North West Development Vanguard (NWDV) criticized Badaru for the nationwide security disruptions and demanded his immediate removal for what it described as gross incompetence and political opportunism and political opportunism.

This was contained in a statement signed by the NWDV president Comrade Aminu Sani, along with its secretary, Alhaji Bala Mohammed on Thursday, April 24, 2025, condemning the minister’s handling of the nation’s worsening security crisis.
A part of the statement read, “The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has failed in his primary responsibility to safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians. His continued stay in office is a threat to national security and a betrayal of the trust reposed in him by the Nigerian people,”
Reacting to the escalating insecurity crisis, the NWDV cited recent attacks in two North-Central states, where gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have inflicted havoc on local populations.

At least 50 people were killed in separate attacks on, Otukpo, Katsina-Ala and Logo Local Government Areas in Benue State, according to the NWDV. Reports suggest that over 300 armed men, who are thought to be malians from outside Nigeria, were involved in the attacks.
Similar to this, many attacks in the Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas of Plateau State claimed the lives of over 100 persons.
The NWDV has called for the immediate removal of the defence minister by President Tinubu and a thorough examination of the nation’s security framework in addition to the dismissal.

“Instead of focusing on his duties, the Minister is busy engaging in political activities aimed at positioning himself for the 2027 presidential elections. This is a clear indication that he is more interested in power than in the safety and well-being of Nigerians,”
The group issued a warning that the insecurity crisis and violence will continue and public confidence in the government will continue to decline unless those in charge of national security are held responsible.
Additionally, the group urged religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the foreign community to support better security measures in Nigeria.
