Iranian President Pezeshkian Asserts Iran Isn’t Seeking War with Israel, Warns of Stronger Response
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that his country is not seeking war with Israel but vowed a forceful retaliation if Israel responds to recent missile attacks. In a press conference on Wednesday in Doha, where Pezeshkian appeared alongside Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Iranian leader insisted that Israel’s actions had provoked Iran into launching missiles but stressed that Tehran does not desire further conflict.
“We are not looking for war,” Pezeshkian said, “but if Israel wants to react, we will have a stronger response. This is what the Islamic Republic is committed to.” His remarks came just a day after Iran launched approximately 200 missiles, including hypersonic weapons, toward Israel, which left Israeli civilians scrambling for shelter.
The missile strikes were met with a swift reaction from Israel’s air defense system, which successfully intercepted most of the projectiles. However, two civilians were reported to have suffered minor injuries from shrapnel, and a missile damaged a school building. Israeli authorities reported that several Iranian missiles also landed inside Israeli air force bases, though no significant damage was caused.
Iran’s Message to the West
President Pezeshkian accused Israel of instigating insecurity across the Middle East, stating, “The dirty goal of the Zionist regime is to cause insecurity and spread crisis in the region.” He urged Western nations, particularly the United States and European countries, to take a firm stance against Israel’s military activities. According to Pezeshkian, the ongoing Israeli actions are a threat to regional stability and push the region closer to further conflict.
He also made a direct appeal to the international community to rein in Israel, describing it as an entity “planted” in the region by Western powers, which is now responsible for the ongoing bloodshed. His comments reflect the long-standing animosity between Iran and Israel, which has been further exacerbated by recent escalations between the two nations.
Qatar’s Stance and Concerns over Regional Stability
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, joined Pezeshkian in condemning Israel’s military actions. He warned that Israel’s aggressive tactics, including its attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, were pushing the Middle East to the “brink of the abyss.” Qatar has long played a mediating role in regional conflicts, particularly in the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestinian groups. The emir reaffirmed Doha’s commitment to pressing for a ceasefire between Israel and the militant group Hamas, which had initiated hostilities on October 7, triggering the ongoing war.
Sheikh Tamim voiced concerns that Israel’s actions, especially its ongoing attacks on Gaza, could plunge the region into a wider, more catastrophic conflict. He indicated that Qatar would continue to use its diplomatic channels to broker peace between the warring sides, emphasizing the need for stability in the volatile region.
Ongoing Tensions and the Potential for Escalation
The recent missile exchange and threats of further escalation have raised concerns about the potential for a broader conflict in the Middle East. Israel and Iran have long been at odds, with tensions often spilling over into proxy conflicts in countries like Syria and Lebanon. Iran’s missile strikes, reportedly including advanced hypersonic technology, mark a significant escalation in hostilities between the two nations, while Israel’s continued military operations in Gaza and against Hezbollah suggest that neither side is willing to back down.
Observers fear that the conflict could expand beyond its current borders if diplomacy fails. While Iran maintains that it does not seek war, its commitment to responding to Israeli actions has cast a shadow over any potential for a peaceful resolution.
