For many Nigerians, consistent electricity has often felt like a distant luxury. However, in Ogun State, that narrative is beginning to shift.

The state government has launched an ambitious initiative to provide 24-hour power supply to its residents and industrial hubs. This move is not just about keeping the lights on; it is a strategic effort to cement the state’s position as Nigeria’s industrial capital. By tackling energy poverty head-on, Ogun is setting a new template for sub-national economic growth.

A Strategic Pivot to Energy Independence

The push for constant power is driven by a new legal framework. Recent constitutional amendments in Nigeria now allow state governments to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity.

Ogun State is among the first to capitalize on this legislative freedom. The government is currently partnering with private sector investors to build independent power plants.

These plants will focus on “embedded power” solutions. This means electricity is generated close to where it is consumed, reducing the energy lost during long-distance transmission. For the massive factories in Agbara and Sagamu, this translates to lower operational costs.

When companies no longer have to rely solely on expensive diesel generators, they can expand their production. This expansion eventually leads to more jobs and a more robust local economy.

While large industries are a major focus, the “Light Up Ogun” project also aims to reach the grassroots. Small business owners, such as barbers, tailors, and cold-room operators, stand to benefit the most from reliable power. Constant electricity eliminates the high cost of fuel, which currently swallows a huge chunk of their profits.

Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration is also exploring renewable energy options. Solar-powered streetlights and mini-grids are being deployed in rural areas that were previously off the grid.

This holistic approach ensures that the benefits of 24-hour power are felt by everyone, not just those in the cities. It creates a “level playing field” where a small entrepreneur in a village has the same digital opportunities as a tech start-up in Abeokuta.

Building a Modern Industrial Haven

Ogun State’s energy roadmap is a long-term play. The government understands that infrastructure is the greatest magnet for investment.

By providing a stable environment, they are encouraging more global brands to set up shop within their borders. This vision includes the development of “Special Agro-Processing Zones” that will rely on this 24-hour power supply.

The road to total energy coverage is still under construction, but the progress is visible. As the state continues to integrate gas-to-power projects and sustainable energy, the dream of a “flicker-free” Ogun is becoming a reality.
