Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate in the general election of 2023, has criticised Nigeria’s deteriorating governance, claiming that while those who work are not taken care of, those who do not work, especially politicians and officials in public offices are busy embezzling public money.

Speaking at the Godfrey Okoye School of Nursing Sciences in Enugu on Tuesday, where he gave N20 million to the institution, Obi said he was disappointed in the leadership of the nation, citing World Bank and United Nations Children’s Fund reports that show Nigeria’s poverty and malnutrition rates are getting worse.

He said “It is not easy to be working in our country today, because those who work are not cared for, those who don’t work, which are the government officials and politicians, are busy stealing up the money,” he said.

Obi highlighted that the country’s wealth should be used to benefit all of its citizens, not just a chosen few, and that a change in governance was necessary. “Government is now a criminal scene because of us. “We’re using the resources to do the wrong thing instead of the right thing,” he stated.

He emphasised that Nigeria, in particular, needed nurses to serve community and village hospitals, and he urged students at the College of Nursing Sciences to take their studies seriously.

Obi praised the efforts of volunteer organisations, especially the church, in funding initiatives such as the teaching hospital.

The Most Rev. Dr. Callistus Onaga, the Proprietor and Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, thanked Obi for his generosity and assured him that they would continue to pray for him.

“We are praying for you as I said why praying – not everybody loves what is right, not everybody likes trying to look into the plight of the poor people but you have done it. We are happy that you are here and you are associating with us. God will continue to protect you. We are happy this is not the only thing you are doing in Enugu, there are other areas, other hospitals you have been helping.

“What we are praying is that your dream of Nigeria must come through, and God will make it possible that somebody who can handle that dream will take over. That is why I want to talk prophetically – we are not into politics here, but the truth has to be said, things are not working out well in our country. We will continue to remember you in prayer.”
