Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, has reacted to remarks made by Peter Obi, the work Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential contender, saying the “labour of our heroes past is all in vain.”
Akpabio suggested that before striving for the president of Nigeria, Obi should first address the internal problems of his little party.
Akpabio made his comments on Thursday at the Valedictory Session held in memory of Chief Edwin Clark, the late South-South leader and former Federal Commissioner for Information. He claimed that Obi lacked the moral authority to lead a bigger, more complicated nation like Nigeria if he is unable to resolve the current issue inside the Labour Party.
Obi paid tribute to Chief Clark on Wednesday at the Abuja Memorial Lecture and Day of Tribute, praising his brave, selfless, and valuable life.
Peter Obi added that the sacrifices made by previous leaders like General Gowon and former President Jonathan were in vain. Obi drew a comparison between the massive demonstrations that took place during Jonathan’s tenure over comparable concerns and the lack of rallies in response to the recent increases in fuel prices.
Along with criticising the Nigerian leadership, Peter Obi said that there was no democracy in the country and bemoaned the charge that his criticism amounted to “demonising” it.
Responding to Peter Obi’s statement, Akpabio said, “If you cannot resolve the crisis in your Labour Party, how can you solve the crisis of Boko Haram or other major national issues? I urge those aspiring to lead Nigeria to first address the issues within their own parties.”
Akpabio finished by adding that while social media can be a tool for communication, it is mainly unregulated and often used to sow discord. Prior to concentrating on the national arena, he advised Obi and other presidential contenders to settle their party’s problems.
