Just like Odi and Zaki Biam, Nigeria suffers in Okuoma.
The killing of soldiers by warring youths in Okuoma, Delta State, has stirred deep sorrow and emotion among Nigerians. Initially reported as 16, their picture collage revealed they were 17. This loss has overshadowed the anger over allegations of budget padding by the national assembly and misuse of public funds by senators.

The soldiers, including a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and others, were on a peacekeeping mission when Okuoma youths surrounded and killed them. Since then, soldiers have retaliated by setting houses ablaze and making arrests in Okuoma, resulting in more deaths.
This incident recalls similar tragedies in Odi, Bayelsa State, and Zaki Biam, Benue State. The Odi massacre in 1999 saw over 900 civilians killed by the military, while in Zaki Biam in 2001, hundreds of unarmed civilians were executed in retaliation for the killing of soldiers.
Like in Odi and Zaki Biam, blood is now flowing in Okuoma, with many residents killed and others displaced. It’s a national calamity, highlighting our failure to learn from past tragedies.
