According to the government, the initiative will be driven by a “One Citizen, One Tree” campaign, targeting participation across all 20 local government areas of the state.
Governor Dapo Abiodun stated that the trees will serve multiple purposes — providing fruits and medicinal value, helping to reduce urban temperatures, and mitigating the effects of flooding caused by ozone layer depletion.
The Ogun State government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with a plan to plant one million trees across the state by the end of the 2025 planting season.
Governor Dapo Abiodun made this known on Saturday during the 2025 Ogun Tree Planting Day event, organized by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Ministries of Forestry, Physical and Urban Development, Housing, and Community Development. He was represented by the Commissioner for Forestry, Oludotun Taiwo.
Abiodun called on residents to take collective responsibility in combating deforestation and safeguarding the environment.
“Today we are not just planting trees, we are planting hope, health, and the future of Ogun State,” he said. “Trees give us oxygen, they clean our air, shield our climate, and yet, year after year, they disappear.”
He emphasized that the theme of this year’s campaign, “Plant and Grow Trees, Sustain Life,” aligns with the state’s ISEYA agenda—particularly the “A,” which stands for Agriculture and the Environment.
Highlighting the increasing effects of climate change, the governor pointed to longer dry seasons, flash floods, and rising temperatures as growing threats, stressing the urgent need for local solutions.
“Today, we are launching the One Citizen, One Tree campaign across all 20 local government areas. Our target is to plant one million trees before the end of the season, establish community trees in every LGA, train 500 youths and women as green ambassadors, and integrate tree planting into school curricula and market sanitation programs,” he said.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, reiterated that the Abiodun-led administration has a comprehensive decarbonization plan to make the state more livable, especially given its industrial status. He stated that tree planting in Ogun is not merely ceremonial but strategic, scientific, and essential for survival.
He also announced plans to collaborate more with industries and offer incentives to schools, groups, and institutions excelling in tree planting.
Commissioner for Physical and Urban Development, Tunji Odunlami, in his goodwill message, described trees as essential to life and urged developers and residents to avoid indiscriminate tree felling during construction projects. He emphasized that town planning regulations already support tree preservation.
Meanwhile, a representative from the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), Adeyemo Olayomade, assured that the foundation will help ensure the trees planted are properly nurtured to maturity.
