PDP Dominates Akwa Ibom, Wins 30 Councils in LG Polls

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in the local government elections held on October 5th, 2024, in Akwa Ibom State. The PDP won 30 out of 31 local government areas (LGAs), cementing its stronghold in the state. The only exception was in Essien Udim Local Government Area, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a win. This region is significant as it is the home base of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.

Aniedi Ikoiwak, the chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), made the official announcement, highlighting the PDP’s victories in critical areas such as Uyo, Onna, Esit Eket, and Eket, which have traditionally supported the party. The PDP also won in Nsit Ubium, the home LGA of Governor Umo Eno, alongside Oron, Mbo, Itu, Ibiono, and other LGAs, solidifying its dominance in the state.

Challenges During the Elections

Despite the PDP’s overwhelming success, the elections were not without challenges. In Ibiono Local Government Area, the election office was set ablaze by hoodlums just before the election began. Although the arson disrupted some operations, the election proceeded with security reinforcements and additional measures to ensure safety and fairness.

Meanwhile, in Itu Local Government Area, KufreAbasi Edidem, the Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, praised the peaceful conduct of the elections. After casting his vote in Atai Ibiaku Itam, Unit 002, Ward Eleven, he addressed reporters, commending voters for their orderly behavior.

However, Edidem acknowledged that some polling units experienced delays in the arrival of voting materials due to the poor road conditions. The deplorable state of the roads in East and West Itam zones made it difficult to transport election materials from the AKISIEC office in Mbak Itam to the polling stations. Despite these logistical hurdles, Edidem expressed confidence that the PDP would sweep the chairmanship and councillorship seats in Itu, reinforcing the party’s strong presence across Akwa Ibom.

A Dominant Victory for the PDP

The local government elections in Akwa Ibom further reinforced the PDP’s political dominance in the state, a position it has held for many years. The landslide victory in 30 out of 31 LGAs highlights the party’s deep-rooted support among the electorate. The PDP’s win in strategic areas such as Uyo and Governor Umo Eno’s home LGA of Nsit Ubium signifies the party’s continued strength in both rural and urban regions of the state.

The only LGA where the PDP did not win, Essien Udim, was secured by the APC, a predictable outcome given that it is the home of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This area has consistently been a stronghold for the APC, and the result underscores the influence of Akpabio in his local community.

Despite some challenges, including incidents of arson and poor road conditions affecting the transportation of election materials, the election was largely peaceful. Voters turned out in significant numbers, and election observers reported that the process was conducted fairly in most areas.
