PDP Governors Split Over Damagum’s Leadership Ahead of 2027
The internal discord within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the leadership of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum has deepened, with several governors openly expressing their opinions on social media. These divisions reflect a larger power struggle ahead of the 2027 elections, as some governors aim to retain political influence even after their terms end.
Wike and Atiku’s Proxy Battle Fuels Crisis
The rift within the party can be traced to a proxy war between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Atiku’s loyalists prefer a North Central chairman to complete the tenure of the ousted National Chairman, Iyiorchia Ayu, while Wike’s camp supports Damagum’s continued leadership until the next convention. With ambitions for 2027 at stake, governors like Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed are positioning themselves for influence in the party’s future presidential and vice-presidential nominations.
Fence-Mending Efforts Struggle to Bridge Divides
The PDP’s Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has been engaging in reconciliation efforts, but the cracks remain wide. While some governors like Fintiri and Makinde openly support Damagum, others, such as Adeleke and Mohammed, favor a leadership change in line with the party’s constitution. The Board remains optimistic that the party will eventually overcome these challenges and unite ahead of future elections.
