The killing of a new group of farmers in one of the farming towns in Akure North Local Government Area by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen has sparked yet another protest in the capital of Ondo State, Akure.
According to reports, the farmers were killed by suspected herdsmen early on Tuesday morning while traveling to the farm in the 13/13 farming village in the Ajagbusi neighborhood of Ala Elefosan in Akure North Local Council.
The protesters condemned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s stance on the state’s insecurity.
The bodies of the dead farmers were brought to the state secretariat in Alagbaka, the state capital, by a large group of young people from the neighborhood and the farmers’ coworkers who were incensed over the ongoing murders.
The most recent herdsmen attack occurred a few weeks after five farmers were slain in the state’s “Aba Oyinbo” local council area in Akure North. The bodies were displayed and there was a significant protest outside the governor’s office.
The demonstrators emphasized that the current situation was not as bad as it was under the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the state’s previous governor.

Due to the large number of demonstrators, the roundabout intersection leading to the federal secretariat and the governor’s office was closed and barricaded, leaving drivers and commuters stranded.
The demonstrators were then dispersed when stern-looking security guards were similarly mobilized to the protest site.
Taiwo Samuel, the traditional leader of the Adeshina Community, described the tragedy “one too many” while bemoaning the government’s incapacity to stop the ongoing attacks and deaths.
He said “Three farmers were killed in the Thirteen camp in the Ajagbusi area of Ala Elefosan in Akure North Local Council. They were on their way to the farm this morning (Tuesday) when the Fulani herdsmen attacked them and shot them. One person was also killed two days ago.

“We purposely brought their bodies to Alagbaka for everyone to see what we are facing and to prevent any form of denial, which we have experienced in the past.
“The killing of our people by these herdsmen is becoming too much. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa promised us that the place will be fully secured after the last incident. With this latest development, the government must allow us to secure ourselves.

“During the late former governor’s administration, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, this kind of thing was not rampant, but with the current governor, everything has gone awry. We are tired of these continuous killings; we can no longer sleep in our communities.”
