In order to obtain approval for Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede’s nomination as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a letter to the Senate. The letter, which was sent to the Senate on Friday, requests Oluyede’s confirmation in line with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act and Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, according to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

After Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja became unwell and died on November 5, Oluyede was named Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30.

According to the release, President Tinubu said he was confident in Oluyede’s professional integrity, leadership abilities, and wealth of experience, all of which he said would assist him manage the army and maintain stability and national security.

Oluyede, a member of the 39th Regular Course, was the 56th Commander of the Nigerian Army’s elite Infantry Corps, stationed in Jaji, Kaduna, prior to being appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff. In 1992, he received his second lieutenant commission, and in September 2020, he was promoted to Major-General.

Throughout his career, Oluyede has served in a variety of command roles, such as Commandant of the Amphibious Training School, Staff Officer in the Guards Brigade, Company Commander at 177 Guards Battalion, and Platoon Commander and adjutant at 65 Battalion. He has taken part in a number of missions, such as Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) Mission in Liberia, and Operation HADIN KAI in the Northeast, where he oversaw the 27 Task Force Brigade.

Oluyede has won multiple decorations for his exceptional service in a variety of missions, including the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award, the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, the Field Command Medal, the Field Command Medal of Honour, and the Field Training Medal.

Oluyede has three kids and is married.

President Tinubu honored former COAS Lagbaja posthumously by granting him the rank of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) of Nigeria, according to a report released by Intel Region last week. Nigeria has the third-highest CFR honorable, beneath the GCON and GCFR.This was revealed by Tinubu during the late army chief’s funeral. On behalf of her late husband, Mariya, the deceased’s wife, accepted the honor. After a brief illness, the former army chief passed away in Lagos on November 5. Yesterday, his remains was flown to Abuja for burial and funeral ceremonies.
