A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, Segun Sowunmi has criticized Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, for allegedly de-marketing Nigeria abroad.
Sowunmi’s statements comes after Obi’s most recent remarks regarding the nation’s poverty rate, which he said has increased drastically over the past 35 years as a result of inept leadership.
Recall that Peter Obi was invited by Professor Peter Lewis, the well-known author of “Growing Apart: Comparing Indonesia and Nigeria,” to give a talk on “Politics and Change in Nigeria” at Johns Hopkins University in the United States on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
Obi, who was honored to receive the invitation, took to his shared his X account on Friday to share a summary of his address. He emphasized that Nigeria had more more people that 2 counties put together, further citing the country’s leadership failures as a primary cause.
Responding to Peter Obi’s comment, Sowunmi expressed his disagreement with Obi’s input, which he considered to be an attempt to de-market Nigeria.

He stated that the metrics the former governor employed to reach this conclusion were very biased because they failed to account for Nigeria’s expanding unorganized sector.
He advised the head of Obi to avoid using the cliché of giving a bad impression of the nation, particularly in foreign settings.

“You ought to place the burden on them and their crazy neoliberal policy and its deep state manipulations that put undue pressure on Africa! No one who wishes to lead a nation called Nigeria must be the de-marketer on steroids of the same country he or she wishes to lead. Stop it immediately.
