An Abuja-Kaduna train overturned on Tuesday, causing panic among passengers who fled for safety amid fears of notorious bandits operating along the route.
The incident happened shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11:00 AM, heading toward Kaduna along the well-known corridor.
While many passengers expressed gratitude to God that no lives were lost, there was widespread anxiety due to past attacks by criminal bandits in the area.
An eyewitness stated that the derailment happened without warning, triggering confusion as passengers rushed out of the derailed cabins.
Confirming the development, Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, said that a rescue operation is ongoing at the scene of the incident.
He said, “I don’t want to say much for now, but the incident is confirmed and the rescue operation is on as we speak.”
