The United States security authorities have allegedly accused China of sponsoring a cyber hack of the US Treasury Department.
According to reports, the hackers were able to get access to employees’ data and some secret documents. The hacker accessed the server through a remote work security key, which was used to access certain documents and employee data.
BeyondTrust, a third-party software service provider, was able to flag down this hacking incident, which occurred on December 8.
The US Treasury Department issued a statement stating, “Based on available indicators, the incident has been attributed to a China state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor.”
“In accordance with Treasury policy, intrusions attributable to an APT are considered a major cybersecurity incident.”
The hacker has since been deactivated from the system and denied further access, with more security measures put in place by the department.
The US Treasury Department also stated they are working with the security agencies to determine what caused the hack and what further actions to embark on.
The President Biden administration confirmed this incident.
