Yiaga Africa Trains Personnel for Observer Duties Ahead of Edo 2024 Governorship Elections.

BENIN CITY – With the Edo State governorship elections set for September 21, 2024, Yiaga Africa has started training personnel for observer duties. This was revealed in a statement by Cynthia Mbamalu, the Director of Programmes for Yiaga Africa, following a two-day intensive training for local government supervisors from the 18 LGAs of Edo State.

Key Details:

  • Training Objectives: The training, held in Benin City, focused on ensuring supervisors provide accurate, simplified, and data-driven reports on pre-election activities to encourage citizen participation. Supervisors were trained in the Process and Results Verification for Transparency (PRVT) methodology used in election observation.
  • #WatchingTheVote Project: The training is part of the #WatchingTheVote initiative, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aimed at building citizens’ confidence in the elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
  • Non-Partisan Reporting: Mbamalu emphasized the importance of non-partisan and objective reporting of pre-election activities, including security issues, INEC activities, voter education, and violence monitoring.

PRVT Methodology:

  • The PRVT methodology uses sound statistical principles and a representative sample of polling units to provide stakeholders with credible, independent, and objective information on the election process, reflecting true voting patterns and conduct on election day.

Advocacy Visits:

  • Edo State Commissioner of Police: Yiaga Africa’s team visited the Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, who assured them of the police’s readiness and adequate security measures for the elections. He encouraged Yiaga Africa to intensify voter education efforts to promote peaceful elections.
  • INEC Office: The team also visited the INEC office in Edo State, where they discussed their pre-election activities and deployment plans. INEC’s Head of Elections and Political Parties, Mr. Akpoguma Emmanuel, highlighted ongoing INEC activities and emphasized the importance of sharing pre-election observations with INEC to aid in planning and risk mitigation.

Conclusion:

Yiaga Africa’s comprehensive training and advocacy efforts are aimed at ensuring a free, fair, and credible election in Edo State. By equipping local government supervisors with the necessary skills and knowledge, the organization seeks to promote transparency and build public trust in the electoral process.
