Republican leaders are growing increasingly frustrated over President Donald Trump’s sidelining of Ukraine, though they remain powerless to curb his actions.
Their indignation mounted on Monday as they grappled with the president’s choices to purchase Russian diesel, ease Russia Sanctions on Moscow, and consider withholding intelligence sharing from Ukraine.
Coupled with recent unexplained disruptions in U.S.-operated satellite defense networks supporting Kyiv, these moves left lawmakers scrambling to address the widening rift between Washington and Ukraine.
Senators on the Armed Services Committee urged Trump to negotiate a truce with Ukraine to halt its strikes against Russian energy infrastructure.
Meanwhile, a separate group of lawmakers reached out directly to the Ukrainian president with an urgent message, while a third faction warned that the dispute could jeopardize the administration’s final policy initiatives.
After a last-minute call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Sens. Thom Tillis and Richard Blumenthal said, “Democrats and Republicans in Congress understand what will happen if [President Vladimir] Putin faces no consequences for his murderous invasion.”
Following this, both Republicans and Democrats are now frantically attempting to determine their next steps if Trump refuses to change course, though they acknowledge that their options remain severely constrained.
Backstory…
The growing rift between US President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers over Russia and Ukraine follows his decision to waive new sanctions against Moscow, despite previously signing legislation intended to intensify economic pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
These sanctions were enacted under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which Trump signed into law in September.
The decision has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers who argue that easing restrictions could benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin while weakening Washington’s support for Ukraine.
