Peter Obi, the presidential flagbearer for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), clarified that if elected in 2027, his commitment to a single term is a firm pledge rather than a political tactic.
Peter Obi, the former Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, also denied claims that he is offering to serve only one term in office merely to secure political power.
Responding to statements from his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, regarding a four-year single-term agreement, the former Labour Party standard-bearer confirmed on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics with Seun Okinbaloye that the arrangement was indeed a binding “agreement.”
He said that as “gentlemen, we must respect” the deal and insisted that “I don’t need more than four years to show the path Nigeria will take.” It’s a simple thing.”
“And I say it again: I will serve for four years — full stop. If you want me, it’s four years, full stop — not a day more,” he said.
I’m not desperate to be president but to make Nigeria work
Speaking further on his single term promise, the NDC candidate firmly clarified that Peter Obi, says he is not desperate to become President of Nigeria.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that his political aspirations stem from a commitment to solve Nigeria’s core challenges rather than an appetite for executive power.
He emphasized that effective leadership must be measured by tangible improvements in the daily lives of citizens, the restoration of public confidence in governance, and the creation of sustainable economic growth.
Reiterating his stance, Obi stressed that national progress must always override personal political ambition, calling for leadership genuinely focused on addressing the nation’s critical issues.
Additionally, Obi also reiterated his commitment to reforms aimed at improving governance, strengthening public institutions and rebuilding the economy if elected in the 2027 presidential election.
