Former Nigeria International, Tijani Babangida, is receiving crowdfunding support from the Dutch clubs he played for while he was a player in the Netherlands. The Dutch clubs, namely Ajax, VVV Venlo, and Roda JC Kerkrade, are the frontrunners for the crowdfunding campaign of at least €170,000—about N272,109,812.23 for Babangida and his wife’s medical bills.
Earlier this year, Babangida and his family were involved in a deadly auto crash along the Kaduna-Zaria Road that claimed the lives of their son and his younger brother.
They were rushed to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, the closest top medical facility in the area. Afterwards, they were moved to a hospital in Abuja before finally flying abroad to the Netherlands with the help of his former teammates.
NaijaEyes gathers that an article was written in support of and soliciting for funds for Babangida.
The article titled, “Tijjani Babangida’s suffering: “He laughs from the outside but is crying from the inside,” had some brief statements about Babangida’s life and financial situation.
A statement reads, “There are financial challenges. The total cost to cover the treatment and all other costs is at least 170,000 euros. A large sum that Baba can’t afford. Due to wrong investments and failed projects in his home country of Nigeria, he has lost all his money.”
Babangida was moved emotionally on hearing what the clubs were doing.
He said, “Fortunately, Ajax, VVV, and Roda have all offered to help me. They have joined forces so that not only a few people but everyone can help through crowdfunding. This is to pay my wife’s medical expenses. I think that’s very beautiful; I don’t know how to thank them.
“These guys did everything for me. When I came here, my driver’s license was no longer valid. They took me everywhere. Not only to the hospital but also to the rehabilitation centre Adelante. My wife’s arm is paralyzed; she can’t use it anymore. Rehabilitation will be months.”
Tijiani Babangida is an ex-Nigerian international who played 36 matches for the Super Eagles and scored 5 goals. He played for Ajax in 102 matches, scoring 24 goals and recording 16 assists.
