AFCON Champ Claps Back at Osimhen for Finidi Comments: ‘I Don’t Care Who You Are.
Victor Osimhen has come under fire from AFCON winner Brown Ideye for his demeaning comments about coach Finidi George on social media. Last week, the Napoli striker took to social media to express his anger at Finidi over a comment that Finidi allegedly made. Finidi was reported to have said he could not beg any player to play for the Super Eagles after Osimhen missed the World Cup qualifiers due to injury.
In response, Brown Ideye has voiced his opinion on the matter. Ideye believes that Osimhen, who was recently named African Footballer of the Year, had no right to publicly criticize a Super Eagles icon like Finidi. He stated that current Super Eagles players lack a strong sense of nationalism and enthusiasm for defending Nigeria’s colors.
During an X space conversation, Ideye said, “When a coach calls you out, the best way to handle it is to get your lawyer, draft a response on social media, call the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, and speak to the coach directly.” He criticized Osimhen’s public rant, saying, “What Victor did is wrong. You don’t need to explain to people why you missed camp due to injury. Call the coach first to confirm if he really said what was reported before posting on social media.”
Ideye revealed that he reached out to Osimhen after his Instagram Live outburst, advising him to apologize to Finidi. “I told him I’m disappointed in you. You need to go back on social media and apologize to Nigerians and Finidi. He’s a legend, and you don’t disrespect people like that,” Ideye said.
He emphasized that regardless of Osimhen’s accolades or club achievements, respecting legends like Finidi is crucial. Ideye also pointed out the lack of genuine leadership within the current Super Eagles team, attributing this to the behavior seen in some players. He mentioned the absence of strong figures like Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and John Obi Mikel, which has led to a decline in discipline and respect among the players.
Ideye concluded, “Africa’s best players don’t behave the way you did, Victor. You had 2.7 million people watching you on Instagram Live, and you were ranting about a legend. You need to apologize. It’s not just about your personal pride; it’s about setting an example and maintaining respect within the team.
