Harry Kane Fires Back at Ex-England Stars’ Criticism.

Harry Kane has robustly defended his England teammates against criticism from former internationals amid the ongoing 2024 European Championship. Following England’s 1-1 draw with Denmark, Kane responded to ex-England striker-turned-pundit Gary Lineker, who harshly described the team’s performance as “s***.”

Kane’s Response to Lineker’s Criticism
Speaking before England’s final group game, Kane emphasized respect for those who have worn the England shirt. “I’d never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially, you know, a player who’s worn the shirt and knows what it’s like to play for England,” he stated. He acknowledged the impact of criticism from ex-players and pundits, especially on newer members of the squad.

“Maybe ex-players or ex-players who are pundits now have got to realise that it’s very hard not to listen to what they say, especially for some players who are not used to it or some players who are new to the environment,” Kane added.

Responsibility of Former Players
Kane underscored the responsibility of former players to be mindful of their comments. “I always feel like former players and pundits have a responsibility. I know they’ve got to be honest and give their opinion, but also they have a responsibility of being an ex-England player.”

Highlighting the historical context, Kane pointed out that England has not won a major tournament in a long time and noted that many of the critical ex-players were part of that history. “The bottom line is, we haven’t won anything as a nation for a long, long time. And, you know, a lot of these ex-players were part of that as well… they do know that it’s tough to play in these major tournaments. It’s tough to play for England.”

England’s Euro 2024 Journey
Despite some underwhelming performances, England remains unbeaten at Euro 2024. Kane’s goal against Denmark was pivotal in maintaining their unbeaten streak. The team now looks forward to their final group match against Slovenia, where a victory could see them finish top of their group. Kane and his teammates are focused on advancing in the tournament, undeterred by the external criticisms.

As the Three Lions prepare for their crucial game, Kane’s defense of his teammates highlights the unity and resilience within the squad. The captain’s call for respect and understanding from former players serves as a reminder of the challenges and pressures of representing England on the international stage.
