Super Eagles Legend Hails Greatest Nigerian Striker Ever.
Sunday Oliseh, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, recently declared Rashidi Yekini as the greatest Super Eagles striker of all time. Oliseh, who played alongside Yekini, expressed his admiration during a social media response commemorating the 30th anniversary of Samson Siasia’s goal against Argentina in the 1994 World Cup. Oliseh praised Yekini’s intelligence and skill, particularly in setting up Siasia’s memorable goal.
Yekini, who scored 37 goals in 62 international appearances, remains Nigeria’s top scorer. His career highlights include being named African Footballer of the Year in 1993 and being the top scorer in the 1992 and 1994 AFCON tournaments. Yekini also scored Nigeria’s first World Cup goal during their 3-0 victory over Bulgaria in 1994.
Despite Nigeria producing many exceptional strikers like Daniel Amokachi, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Nwankwo Kanu, Obafemi Martins, and Victor Ikpeba, Oliseh believes Yekini stands out. Oliseh emphasized Yekini’s exceptional playmaking abilities and his pivotal role in Nigerian football history.
Yekini’s legacy is marked by his remarkable scoring record and his profound impact on the Super Eagles. He passed away in 2012 at the age of 48, but his contributions to Nigerian football continue to be celebrated and remembered by fans and players alike.
