The Lagos Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the directive in a statement on Wednesday, urging residents in all five divisions of the state to stay at home between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. to clean their surroundings.

He stated that residents are expected to sweep their environment and clear blocked drains in front of their homes before resuming their daily activities.

Wahab added that the Lagos government has made adequate preparations for the exercise, including the deployment of evacuation and compactor trucks across the state. The Lagos Waste Management Authority has also been positioned to ensure prompt collection of waste and debris generated during the cleanup.

To enforce compliance, top Lagos government officials will monitor activities in different locations. The First Lady of Lagos State, Claudiana Sanwo-Olu, alongside members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), will lead one monitoring team, while the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, will supervise another team in a separate local government area.

The Lagos commissioner also disclosed that major transport unions in the state have agreed to suspend operations during the sanitation period. He noted that no commercial vehicles would operate from major parks and terminals between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

According to him, the reintroduction of the monthly exercise followed repeated appeals from residents who believe a fixed time should be dedicated to collective environmental cleaning.

He further called on Community Development Associations (CDAs) to mobilize residents and ensure full participation, stressing the importance of restoring the culture of environmental hygiene.

Wahab also confirmed that local governments, LCDAs, and some private organisations have provided equipment and vehicles to support waste evacuation.

He warned that Lagos environmental health officers and enforcement teams would be deployed across communities to ensure strict compliance, adding that defaulters would not be excused. Offenders, he said, would be issued abatement notices and prosecuted under the Lagos State Environmental Management Law of 2017 and other relevant regulations.

The monthly sanitation exercise was reintroduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on March 14, during which he personally led officials to clean parts of Agege Motor Road in Mushin.
