Amazon Acquires Indian Video Streaming Service MX Player.

Amazon has acquired Indian video streaming service MX Player, following engagement talks reported by TechCrunch last year. Despite Sony’s interest, complications with their Zee merger derailed their efforts.

MX Player will help Amazon gain popularity in smaller Indian cities and towns, complementing Amazon’s strong urban presence. Amazon will retain the MX Player branding.

Amazon has been expanding its video streaming in India, offering affordable Prime subscriptions and partnerships with telecom operators. In 2021, it launched a free, ad-supported video service.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the acquisition, emphasizing their commitment to entertaining Indian audiences with local originals and exclusive content across Prime Video and miniTV.

Reliance and Disney lead the Indian streaming market, commanding 55% of monthly active users. MX Player holds a 15% market share, while Netflix and Prime Video each have 3-5%.

Times Internet, which acquired MX Player in 2018 for $140 million, transformed it from a video playback app to a streaming platform with diverse content. They also launched MX TakaTak after TikTok’s ban, later selling it to ShareChat for over $650 million. Times Internet did not respond to requests for comment.
