NFX Restructures: Layoffs in Product, New Investment Hires
Venture capital firm NFX laid off four employees in September 2024 as part of a shift to focus more on its investing team, according to general partner Pete Flint. The layoffs affected one product leader and three engineers as NFX rebalanced its resources, moving from its software and product teams towards expanding its investment team. This move reflects the firm’s growing reliance on AI, which has allowed it to maintain output with fewer staff members.
NFX has been developing and using internal software to discover and evaluate potential investments. However, Flint noted that AI has significantly reduced the need for manpower in these areas. Despite the layoffs, NFX’s product and engineering teams remain large, and the investment team wasn’t impacted by the cuts. In fact, the firm plans to expand its investment team by 20%, with new hires expected in San Francisco and Israel.
As part of this shift, NFX promoted several existing team members. In July 2024, Sarai Bronfeld, based in Tel Aviv, was promoted from principal to partner, while Daniel Museles, based in San Francisco, was promoted to principal after joining the firm as an associate in 2022. Flint emphasized that the company might have more staff overall after these changes than before, as it plans to invest more heavily in its investment team.
NFX was founded in 2017 and is based in San Francisco. The firm specializes in pre-seed and seed-stage investments across various sectors, including biotech, gaming, generative AI, and fintech. With a data-driven approach to venture investing, NFX has raised nearly $1 billion across three early-stage funds and one opportunity fund. The firm has backed notable startups like Lyft, Mammoth Biosciences, and Doordash.
NFX’s decision to restructure isn’t an isolated case. Other venture capital firms have also recently trimmed their workforces. Initialized Capital, for instance, reduced its staff by 36%, while Greylock laid off five investors last fall. Sequoia Capital also cut a third of its platform team in 2023.
This move by NFX signals a broader trend within the venture capital industry, where firms are rebalancing their focus, leveraging AI for efficiency, and expanding their investment capabilities to remain competitive in a fast-evolving market.
