In October last year, 13 states in America and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit against the social media company for failing to adequately protect its young users from injury.
The suits, filed separately in New York, California, Washington D.C., and 11 other states, allege TikTok’s app is designed to be addictive, exploiting children’s vulnerability for profit.
The suits add fuel to the legal battle TikTok already has with American authorities, with the plaintiffs seeking monetary compensation and increased transparency for the China-owned company.

Based on the states, TikTok’s app is designed deliberately to retain users, especially children, for long periods of time, with implications for mental health and the effectiveness of its content moderation policies.
