“Tragedy in Vegas: Cybertruck Blast Kills 1, Injures 7”
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, one person is dead and several injured after a Tesla Cybertruck exploded and caught fire Wednesday morning just outside the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated during a media briefing Wednesday that seven people were treated for minor injuries.
McMahill declined to identify the victim’s identity; however, in a second briefing held late afternoon Wednesday, McMahill provided new information, including that the Cybertruck was rented in Colorado via peer-to-peer rental company Turo and driven to Las Vegas, arriving around 7:30 a.m. PT. The individual then drove the Cybertruck through Las Vegas Strip until it reached the hotel where the incident occurred, he said.
Police know the identity of the person who rented the vehicle, and McMahill said they are looking at that individual. “I am not prepared to release the name of any of the individuals we are looking at at least until next of kin is notified and we have a hundred percent identification,” he added.
Detectives discovered incendiary devices within the truck’s bed, including gasoline canisters and large firework mortars. According to McMahill, the structure of the Cybertruck “limited the damage” inside valet area close to the entrance of the hotel.
One eyewitness who recorded the video of the incident from the hotel lobby, said the car came up outside and ”blew up”; the footage and many others soon went viral across X after being uploaded.
Law enforcement continues to investigate a number of leads, McMahill said. Gov. Joe Lombardo said his office was coordinating with LVMPD and partner agencies.
McMahill referenced the deadly assault that occurred Wednesday morning in New Orleans, which claimed at least 15 lives, during both media briefings. Instead of an implied direct relation to the attack, he stated, ” We’re taking precautions on the part of law enforcement.”
At the Wednesday afternoon press conference, he said, “We’re very well aware of what has happened in New Orleans with the event that occurred there and the number of victims there and the additional IEDs.”
So as you can Imagine, because there was an explosion here on iconic Las Vegas Boulevard, we are taking all of the precautions that we need to take to keep our community safe.
McMahill noted that both vehicles were rented through Turo: the Cybertruck and that Ford truck in New Orleans. It was termed a “coincidence” and was under investigation. Turo, founded in 2010 and considered a form of Airbnb for automobiles, allows private car owners to rent out cars through the startup’s site or app.

It was expected that the IPO filed with the SEC in 2022 would be brought public this year. But, Turo, like other companies, is working with law enforcement, according to a Turo spokesperson speaking to TechCrunch in an emailed statement. “
We are heartbroken by the violence perpetrated in New Orleans and Las Vegas, and our prayers are with the victims and families. We are actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents,” said the emailed statement. “We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in risk management thanks to our world-class trust and safety technologies and teams including experienced former law enforcement professionals.”
