Vinod Khosla accuses the author of SB 1047 of being “unqualified” and “clueless” to control the actual risks posed by AI.
According to Vinod Khosla, the author of California’s recently vetoed AI law, SB 1047, was uninformed about the true risks posed by AI and unfit to express an opinion on matters of international national security. During an onstage interview at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, the remark against state Senator Scott Wiener was made.
Khosla said of Senator Wiener, who represents San Francisco in the California Senate, “He has no idea what the real threats are, which are national security issues.” “I really support him in his endeavors to combat NIMBYism, housing, and other issues. Since those issues are local, I am a strong supporter of them. This is a national security issue on a worldwide scale. He lacks the qualifications to express his opinion there.
Ai Measures Sb
California’s legislature passed the extremely contentious AI measure SB 1047, but Governor Newsom vetoed it in response to criticism from Silicon Valley, Nancy Pelosi, and the US Department of Commerce. The measure tried to hold AI labs accountable for the most serious risks associated with their models, even if they weren’t the ones using them dangerously.
Senator Wiener calls Khosla’s remarks on Monday “incredibly arrogant” for implying that “only AI technologists and mega investors have a right to an opinion” regarding the influence of AI on society, according to TechCrunch.
Thank You remark by Mr Khosla
“Thank you for supporting my housing work, Mr. Khosla. To put it in writing, Wiener told TechCrunch via email, “I work with brilliant housing experts to craft smart housing policy because I have no idea how to build a house.” In a similar vein, I collaborated with some of the world’s leading authorities on artificial intelligence (AI) to develop SB 1047, including Geoffrey Hinton, who just won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work developing machine learning. Many in Silicon Valley, including Khosla, contended that SB 1047 would lessen America’s competitive edge in the AI race by discouraging tech companies from releasing state-of-the-art AI models in California. In a September opinion piece for The Sacramento Bee, Khosla made the case that this measure may transcend the legislative purview of a California state legislature and have an international influence on America’s national security.
Wiener previously told TechCrunch that Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz, among other venture capitalists, had launched
What he described as a propaganda campaign against his bill. He claimed that false information regarding SB 1047’s effects and what the measure truly accomplished had proliferated in recent months and that self-serving investors were responsible for disseminating this false information to media outlets and company founders. Khosla continued by saying that if Wiener were present, he would love to debate him. Although the senator recommended that Khosla debate the AI researcher, Geoffrey Hinton, who backed SB 1047, Wiener is set to talk on AI regulation at Disrupt on Wednesday.
