Voice cloning of political figures remains remarkably simple.
The 2024 election may witness the rise of faked audio and video of political candidates. A study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate found that AI-powered voice cloning services readily complied with requests to generate convincing fake statements from major political figures. While some services had measures to prevent misuse, such as uploading audio samples, these safeguards were easily circumvented. Only one service, ElevenLabs, consistently blocked the creation of voice clones of public figures. However, the study revealed that disinformation could still be generated by exploiting loopholes in the AI systems. If such platforms fail to enforce their policies effectively, the upcoming election season could be marred by a proliferation of fake content.
