Tinubu explains how Nigeria saved N61.58bn and protected farmers from global fertiliser crisis.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that Nigeria saved N61.58 billion through strategic fertiliser procurement efforts, while securing over 449,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser inputs despite disruptions in global supply chains.

The disclosure was made in a statement shared on the President Tinubu’s official page on June 18, 2026.

Tinubu explained that the move was part of measures under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), now restructured under the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), to tackle challenges caused by rising fertiliser costs and supply chain setbacks worldwide.

He noted that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and instability in global markets had placed significant pressure on fertiliser supplies, posing risks to farm productivity and food prices.

According to the President, the government responded by strengthening procurement processes, securing essential raw materials, signing forward contracts, improving coordination across the supply chain, and safeguarding Nigeria’s fertiliser blending industry from the worst effects of the global disruptions.

Tinubu stated that by May 2026, the country had secured over 449,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser inputs, while 10 vessels carrying fertiliser materials had either arrived or were on their way.

He added that Nigeria remains on course to implement a 1.1 million metric tonne fertiliser programme in 2026, equivalent to about 22 million bags.

The President said the strategic procurement approach generated savings of N61.58 billion this year alone, helping to make fertiliser more affordable for farmers despite global economic shocks.

Tinubu also disclosed that Nigeria now has over 90 operational fertiliser blending plants, which he described as the largest blending capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He further noted that the Federal Government had rolled out the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (RH-FISP) through the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) to improve fertiliser access for farmers.

Under the initiative, 515,720 bags of locally produced fertiliser are being distributed to 128,930 smallholder farmers across 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory for the current planting season.

The President added that the NADF is also supporting farmers with digital extension services, fertiliser application guidance, and targeted assistance for crops such as rice, maize, cassava, and soybean.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to boosting agricultural productivity, supporting farmers, strengthening the agricultural value chain, and improving Nigeria’s food security.

He stressed that the government would continue efforts to protect farmers, increase productivity, support local industries, and reduce pressure on food prices over time.

BACKSTORY…

The Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) was introduced by the Federal Government to tackle recurring fertiliser shortages, curb rising prices, and boost local production for Nigerian farmers. Over the years, the programme has focused on reducing dependence on imported fertiliser by strengthening local blending plants and improving access to raw materials.

However, recent global disruptions — including supply chain bottlenecks, inflation, and geopolitical tensions — have driven up the cost of fertiliser inputs worldwide, creating concerns over food production and affordability in Nigeria.

To cushion the impact, the government restructured the initiative under the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), with a stronger focus on strategic procurement and long-term supply agreements aimed at stabilising the market and ensuring farmers have access to inputs during the planting season.
