VP Shettima is set to begin a two-week vacation on Thursday with the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking his first official leave since assuming office in May 2023.
Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, confirmed the break in an official X statement.
The announcement noted that Shettima will use the period for study, reflection, and intellectual renewal ahead of his upcoming official responsibilities.
“During the period, the Vice President will devote time to study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued service to the nation,” the statement said.
Nkwocha explained that Shettima’s absence would also allow him to examine the administration’s existing projects and gain a better awareness of developing national and global policy challenges.
The media aide noted that since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Shettima has actively managed key government initiatives across economic development, food security, humanitarian aid, digital transformation, job creation, and regional cooperation.
He further highlighted the Vice President’s role as Chairman of the National Economic Council, leading collaborations with all 36 state governors, the Central Bank Governor, and top officials to shape national economic and social policies.

VP Shettima’s planned two-week leave comes more than three years into the Tinubu administration and marks his first extended vacation since assuming office in May 2023. During the period, President Bola Tinubu is expected to remain in charge of government business, in line with constitutional provisions.
The development also comes as President Tinubu has undertaken numerous official foreign trips since taking office, travelling to destinations including France, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, India, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, South Africa, Ethiopia and the United States for bilateral meetings, multilateral summits and investment engagements.
