Aisha Yesufu, an activist and senatorial candidate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), dismissed the idea that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike would have a major influence on her political ambition.

She also added her main goal is to win the people’s mandate, not to seek approval from political appointees.

Yesufu, previously affiliated with the African Democratic Congress, ADC, made these remarks during an interview on Channels TV Sunday Politics.

Additionally, she stated that her foremost objective is to secure the senatorial ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

She said, “There are some people who have said they are going to take over Abuja and all of that. We want to give people a viable option that they can be proud of and passionate about.

“I don’t have a Wike to contend with because that’s an appointee. I’m not in the business of appointments. I’m in the business of looking for the mandate of the people. Wike is an appointee; I have no business with appointees.”

She stressed that public popularity alone would not guarantee success without the active support of her followers, and she urged Abuja residents and party members to back her during the primaries.

Aisha Yesufu also said she would meet with former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda and current FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe after she secures the ticket.

ADC Internal Crisis

The activist expressed her confidence that, if elected, she would bring “a breath of fresh air” to politics and uphold accountability to her constituents by revealing that she has completed consultations and screening procedures in advance of the election.

Yesufu described the African Democratic Congress’s (ADC) internal crisis as “heartbreaking” and harmful to Nigeria’s democracy, while also highlighting the importance of strong political parties for the country’s progress.

BACKSTORY…

Recall that on Sunday May 24, the ADC, announced Senator Ireti Kingibe as its flag bearer for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial polls.

This comes after Kingibe secured a landslide victory in the party’s primary election, polling 17,535 votes to defeat her sole challenger, Mubarak Tijjani, who garnered 806 votes.
