Top Nigerian Banks leave customers in the lurch
Customers of top banks in Nigeria have been experiencing difficulties with their transactions. Both the bank apps and USSD transaction platforms have been non-functional. Frustration has led many of these customers to Fintechs and less popular traditional banks.
These banks claim that the glitches were caused by their migration to a new software. According to them, they’re doing their best to provide excellent service to their customers. However, they could have handled the matter with more consideration for the customers.
“What we have seen is that some banks have not managed the process well; particularly, they did not manage the customers’ engagement well. So some customers have moved to other banks while some are going to Fintechs; and if some banks are not managing it well, it might be difficult for most of them”, said Ayokunle Olumide; a financial analyst.
This upgrade by financial institutions was designed and approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the goal is to promote “operational efficiency and enhance customer experience.”
The Guaranty Trust Bank recently completed their upgrade and their system is still recovering. Zenith Bank carried out their upgrade a week ago. Another top bank is said to be in the process of carrying out the same upgrade.
How do Nigerians feel about this?
It appears that the recovery of GTBank’s system is not different from the migration because Nigerians are still complaining about poor service and glitches. Some X users had this to say:

Dear @cenbank is @gtbank still operating as a Commercial Bank (DMB) in Nigeria??? Cause, I don’t understand anymore, their license should be revoked if they can’t simply do a system upgrade while calling humongous profits. It doesn’t add up, the Regulator has Failed!

Hello @gtbank @gtbank_help. I made a N400,000 transaction to another bank, and was debited for it. it’s been over an hour now and yet the receiving bank is yet to confirm value. Please fix this o.
