Super Eagles and Atlanta forward, Ademola Lookman scored twice in the first half as Atalanta overcame league leaders Napoli 3-0 in their Serie A encounter on Sunday at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Heading into the matchday 11, Napoli were unbeaten in any of their previous ten league games, with the sole exception of a 3-0 loss to Hellas Verona in their season opener.
Since that loss, Napoli has won eight games, drawn one, and conceded only two goals, as they sit leading the Serie A table.
However, they gave up as early as 10 minutes into the game against Atalanta, with Lookman shooting a close-range flicked ball from Charles De Ketalaere into Napoli’s goal post.
Atalanta then went ahead 2-0 in the 31st minute when the Nigerian international scored again, but this time beating Alex Meret from a scorching distance to bring his season goal contribution total to 11 with six goals and five assists.
The match ended 3-0 in favor of Atlanta, ball possession was shared equally between the two teams with equal amounts of shots on target.
Ademola Lookman was recently nominated and finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or awards. However, his recent performances this season also put him in a strong position to win the CAF African Player of the Year award scheduled on 16 December 2024 in Marrakech, Morocco.
