Nigerians to experience severe heat waves, temperatures to hit 42 degrees- NiMet
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning about extreme heat waves and high temperatures across the country. Temperatures are expected to rise, with some regions reaching as high as 42°C.
According to NiMet, certain areas will experience the highest temperatures. Kebbi, Jalingo, and Yola will reach 42°C, while Lafia will hit 41°C, Minna and Makurdi will reach 40°C. Overall, temperatures will range from 36°C to 42°C in the North and 34°C to 39°C in the South.
The agency cautioned that the combination of high temperatures and humidity will result in increased discomfort, particularly in certain regions. These areas include the North Central, North West, South East, South South, and South West.
Some of the areas most affected by the heatwave include the FCT, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Taraba, Zamfara, Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Rivers, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, and Delta.
To manage the effects of the extreme heat, NiMet advised that, “People should drink plenty of water, avoid direct sun exposure, and wear light clothing.” Additionally, the agency recommended limiting outdoor activities and taking extra care of vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.
As temperatures continue to rise, NiMet urged the public to brace up, remain vigilant and follow these guidelines to prevent heat-related illnesses.
