The Yobe State Government has prohibited the celebration of ‘Marker Day’ in all public and private schools across the state, citing rising concerns about student indiscipline and moral decline.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Dr. Bukar Aji Bukar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Yobe.
He explained that what were once innocent school festivities have now deteriorated into events that encourage public disorder and erode societal values, prompting the government’s decision to impose the ban in Yobe.
“The celebrations have strayed far from acceptable school practices to now pose serious threats to discipline and security within the learning environment,” the statement read.
He directed all school principals to strictly comply with the ban and warned that any school found organizing or condoning such celebrations would face disciplinary action in Yobe.
The marker day celebration is normally conducted during final examination as graduates use colorful markers to sign on each others uniform to serve as a reminder of their journey together.
