The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that it will not participate in the forthcoming local government election in the state.
The party made the announcement in a statement issued on Thursday in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare.
The local government poll has been scheduled for December 2026, but the APC described the exercise as illegal, poorly conceived, and self-serving.
Sadare argued that the decision to go ahead with the election would further worsen governance at the grassroots level in the state, alleging that Governor Seyi Makinde does not support local government autonomy.
He further claimed that the governor’s intention was to install loyalists who would remain politically aligned with him even after leaving office.
According to him, “the whole world knows that Gov. Makinde does not believe in local government autonomy, and when it comes to grassroots democracy, he cannot be trusted.”
He alleged that the governor had controlled the resources of the 33 local government councils for over seven years, adding that residents were eager for change and greater autonomy at the local level.
Sadare also accused Makinde of attempting to impose a new set of political allies ahead of future elections, claiming such moves were aimed at maintaining influence beyond his tenure.
