The Senate initiates an investigation into the delayed $18.5 billion Abuja Centenary City Project.
The Senate has launched an investigation into the factors behind the prolonged delay in completing the $18.5 billion Centenary City Project in Abuja. It has urged the Federal Government to prioritize the project’s completion.
Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, established an ad hoc committee led by Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau. The committee’s mandate is to scrutinize the original public-private partnership agreement and address issues hindering the project’s progress over the past decade.
Specifically, the Senate directed the committee to assess the agreement and propose any necessary amendments to expedite the project within a specified timeline. The Upper Chamber emphasized the importance of revitalizing the Abuja Centenary City project, citing its potential economic benefits after years of stagnation.
The resolutions stem from a motion sponsored by Senator Ashiru Oyelola Yisa, highlighting the urgency of reviving the project, which commenced in 2014 but remains incomplete despite its intended role as an economic hub. Senator Yisa urged the Senate to review the original agreement and make necessary amendments to ensure the project’s timely completion.
