Following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention earlier this month, the Rivers Assembly has stopped the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

During plenary during the Assembly’s reconvened session in the state capital of Port Harcourt on Thursday, the decision to halt the process was made.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule told the house during plenary that President Bola Tinubu’s intervention led to the suspension of the impeachment process.

He also informed the house that “all court cases filed by the governor, his deputy and the Rivers State House of Assembly have been withdrawn.”

The lawmakers also said they hoped the governor and his deputy will follow the Constitution going forward.

Recall that the Rivers Assembly had began the impeachment process against Fubara and his deputy at its first session in 2026 due to allegations of serious misbehaviour.

During the Speaker-led plenary, Major Jack, the majority leader, read a notice outlining the governor’s alleged serious misbehaviour.

The House has listed a number of charges against the governor and his deputy, including the destruction of the Assembly complex, spending beyond the budget, withholding funds intended for the Assembly Service Commission, allegedly failing to follow a Supreme Court decision regarding the legislature’s financial independence, and other actions considered to be egregious misconduct.

Days after Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike accused the governor of breaking a peace deal mediated by President Bola Tinubu in 2025, the impeachment process was started.

NaijaEyes reports that Tinubu met with Fubara and Wike on Sunday, February 8, at the President’s official residence in Aso Rock, Abuja.

Wike confirmed the meeting, adding that he was very hopeful that the state’s ongoing political issue will soon be resolved after the President took what he called a decisive action.
