The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Wednesday announced that it removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as the National Chairman and the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, respectively.

Additionally, INEC said that it would no longer recognise any party fractions and would not keep an eye on any congresses or conventions held by organisations supporting the impacted leaders.

The announcement has caused confusion and fear in the party, according to the sources.

Additionally, the Commission said that it would not acknowledge Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is at the center of the dispute and is attempting to use the legal system to become national chairman.

It stated that the ruling will stand until the Federal High Court makes a final verdict in a substantive lawsuit.

Mallam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, stated in a statement that the Commission is still dedicated to impartiality.

However, the development has not gone down well with the ADC and some Nigerians.

Tinubu’s govt jittery – ADC

In response to INEC’s ruling, ADC accused INEC of acting under pressure from the Federal Government in a statement released on X on Wednesday. Bolaji Abdullahi, the organization’s National Publicity Secretary, characterised this pressure as “jittery” because to the ADC’s increasing influence.

Abdullahi claimed that the commission’s stance was faulty and full of inconsistencies, failing to be consistent with reason and the facts.

In the midst of what he described as persistent attacks on opposition parties, he also claimed that INEC had “caved to pressure” and sided with the government against the Nigerian people.

According to the ADC spokesperson, the party is now considering its options and will announce its next course of action when it is ready.

“We knew that INEC was being pressured by a government that has become jittery from the ADC’s rising momentum even in the face of its relentless assault on all opposition parties,” he said.
