Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has backed Alabo Dakorinama George Kelly, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Works, as his preferred candidate for the governorship.
George is anticipated to run for the seat on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, marking a significant political step ahead of the general elections in 2027.
Wike agreed to George following a private meeting with important political figures in Port Harcourt on Monday. According to reports, the group examined the state’s political climate and tactics for gaining more power before the upcoming election.

Asari Dokubo and Ateke Tom, two former military leaders, were also present during the gathering.
Their presence, according to our source, highlighted the high-level discussions that took place before the endorsement.
George is regarded as a loyalist in Wike’s political hierarchy and is a seasoned politician in Rivers State who was previously Commissioner for Works.
Despite Wike’s current position at the federal level, the source who attended the meeting claimed that the development was a part of efforts to preserve his political domination in the state.

This comes amid a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, driven by a fierce power struggle between Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his estranged political godfather.
Deep divisions have emerged across the state’s political structure, including the State House of Assembly and local government leadership, as Siminalayi Fubara has steadily distanced himself from Nyesom Wike since taking office.
Tensions continue to simmer, and efforts by Bola Tinubu to broker a truce between the two camps have so far yielded little progress.
